This may be more of the obvious, but does your nuetral light come on when the bike is in nuetral? If not your 96 is doing the same thing as my 98, the pickup for nuetral and/or the kickstand safety switch has given up the ghost. Put the kickstand up, pull in the clutch, and try to start the bike. My guess is it will fire right up. If it does, you'll need a new switch set, or a new nuetral pickup sensor, or have to bypass/delete the safety switch altogether. Having to start with the kickstand up gets old real quick.
